12th April 1980 West Ham 1 Everton 1 at Villa Park.

Just watched the highlights on you tube. A controversial game, a very soft penalty converted by Brian Kidd to give the Toffee's a 1-0 half time lead. Kidd then got himself stupidly sent off in a spat with Tonka. Pancho Pearson then equalised with about 20 minutes left after a superb move involving Dev and Trev. With 2 minutes to go little Paul Allen scored what in my opinion should have been the winner but the Lino gave it offside. I know there was only 2 or 3 camera angles in those days but I am convinced Ollie was not offside as he darted between 2 Everton defenders. I couldn't get to the game but judging by the radio commentary we were the better team on the day, not that it mattered as we won the replay 2-1 on the following Wednesday.

Your memories on that warm, sunny Saturday

Never particularly liked Villa Park, went up there that day and thought we were unlucky and again in 81 for the league cup final replay when Dalglish chipped the winner over Parkes gutted that day.

Made it up to Elland Road for the replay, that was the best away game I have ever been to in 47 yrs following the hammers, bearing in mind I was too young to get out for the Anderlecht final. The other semi final v Frankfurt was the best home game. Those were the days my friends I thought.......

Went to villa park as a 13 with my mates and there older brothers all from Romford probably 15 of us all in.it was my first away game aside from London derbies.
Remember listening to the Ellen Road replay on a wireless most of the older lot went up to Leeds.
The morning of the final oddly enough even though the bookies made Arsenal big favourites most of us(could be my naivety)fancied out chances how right we were.
40 years is miles too long without a major trophy.Back then the Fa cup was a massive deal watched by millions up and down the country

And yeh, about time we won something again for the younger lot especially. It’s well overdue.

Re: 40 Years ago tomorrow
We should’ve won the first game.

The replay was an unbelievable night. The press thought that only 2,000 would go up to Leeds. (think the sun and standard?).
Little did they know!
The mickeys had the Leeds end (never forget the sight of em all piling forward down the terraces when latchford equalised) and we had all the side bit and some behind the opp goal.(thousands basically).

Devos goal - what can I say.
And then it was ecstasy and mayhem “when the ball came over............

Fuckin fantastic!

Just watched the replay Dev tore the Everton defence a new one that night. Billy Wright trying in vain to chop him down as he played a one two with Pearson, Dev had magnificent balance as he stayed on his feet and slid the ball under Hodge.

Not forgetting Frank Seniors goal and dance around the corner flag.....oh happy days and a magnificent night!

What we do without you tube?

Lato - Funny enough, was watching it yesterday as well.

Yep, our lot were all there. Chasing villa about outside, as well as the mickeys.

It is absolutely depressing* that it is soon to be 40 years since our last major trophy.

*Relatively, in football terms of course, compared to the real depressing shit happening in the world right now.

Poor old Paul Allen! Denied a goal in the final as well by Willy Young’s lumbering ‘professional’ foul! Great game at villa park even better at Ellen’s Road with the magical dance round the corner flag! Lampard didn’t know what to do his goals were very rare!

YouTube a great source of old highlights! I particularly like the old England footage from the 70s Brian Moore’s commentary is definitely from a different planet!

Re: 40 Years ago tomorrow
I was there in the Holte end getting showered with loose change from the Everton mob. The replay at Elland Road was one of the great nights in our history. If you were there you'll know exactly what i mean.

Yes, I was there. Went up there on a Lacy's coach. Cracking atmosphere and packed like sardines in the Hilt End.
